To help identify early signs of weakness or general deterioration in individual battery blocks, we offer a nationwide battery impedance and conductance testing service. This will detect early battery failures and highlight any necessary battery replacements.
Catching battery issues before they become a major problem to any critical power system is crucial to keep costs down and allow you to plan for any future battery upgrades.
Depending on the type and size of battery we will carry out either a conductance or impedance test to best suit your requirements.
Here are some of the key features of our services but read on for full details on how we can help.
We cover more details about our services below. We explain what the difference is between an battery impedance test and a battery conductance test, how both help understand the condition of your batteries and of course the benefits of regular battery testing.
But if you would rather speak to one of our experts, call us today or drop us an email to discuss your UPS battery requirements.
Testing of individual battery blocks is a proven way of detecting and preventing potential battery failures by identifying early signs of weakness or general deterioration in individual battery blocks.
Each battery block in a string can and will behave differently to each other. A single battery block can fail before its expected manufacturers design lifetime whilst the battery blocks around it are ok.
This can put stress on the whole battery string and cause bigger and more costly problems. Regular testing from new will act as a battery health check or history of a batteries overall condition.
For impedance testing, an AC electrical current is passed through probes attached to the block terminals, with the internal impedance measurement taken and recorded in milliohms. For conductance testing, the DC current is drawn out of the battery with the internal conductance measurement taken and recorded in millisiemens.
Once every battery cell is checked, this is then recorded and plotted on a graph which indicates the general condition of the batteries, without placing any undue stress on their functionality.
Battery problems evolve over time and as batteries get older, their internal impedance (or resistance) increases until it reaches a manufacturer-defined critical threshold where replacement of an individual battery or set of batteries is recommended to reduce the likelihood of complete failure.
Batteries are the core of your UPS system and if there’s an unrecognised fault, it can mean your system failing when you need it most.
Battery testing is crucial in determining the status of the batteries against the original manufacturer’s specification. The data, once completed, can be downloaded to a computer for detailed analysis.
We recommend regular testing every 6 to 12 months to enable you to build up a history of the battery condition. Comparing batteries against previous tests makes it possible to accurately forecast end of design life predictions and calculate when proactive battery replacement is necessary.
By comparing the values with other batteries, and with those we monitor on previous visits, those batteries with issues can be identified and replaced before complete failure occurs.
Impedance and conductance testing are both non-intrusive services yet highly effective. The UPS does not need to be shut down and the readings can be undertaken on a live working battery system and completed in just a few hours.
Whilst most uninterruptible power supplies available today will be able to monitor the voltage, they do not monitor single blocks which can mean replacing a whole set of batteries and not just the single bad block.
Therefore, regular testing of the batteries is important for keeping costs down and to make sure your batteries are working as efficiently as possible.
Entire battery replacements can be expensive, and testing is a cost-effective way to determine whether this is necessary. We offer a reliable low-cost solution to check the status of your batteries before important decisions to replace all batteries are made.
We can test your batteries as part of one of our UPS service and maintenance packages or as an ad-hoc battery inspection.
If you think you could benefit from a UPS battery impedance or conductance test to keep your business running smoothly, call Specialist Power today on 01234 851155 or alternatively email us at [email protected] to discuss how we can help.
