What Our Experts Say About When to Replace Your Batteries

Our battery disposal and recycling services make it easy for you to protect our environment, and to protect yourself from the penalties of non-compliance.

As we have mentioned in our battery replacement section, VRLA or lead acid batteries will typically have a design life of between five and twelve years depending on the make and model.

Our battery experts recommend changing batteries every 4 years for a 5-year battery life and every 8/9 years for a 10-12 year battery life.

However, one of the main components of any VRLA battery is lead and sulphuric acid, both extremely toxic if mishandled.

Throwing Away Old UPS Batteries Is Not an Option

Replacing batteries requires disposing of the old batteries and the necessary recycling. We have the knowledge, experience, and government accreditations to be able to offer the complete battery replacement service from start to finish.

Simply throwing away old batteries is not an option. It is harmful to the environment; it is illegal and comes with severe penalties to organisations that fail to adhere to the strict disposal regulations.

Where split, damaged or leaking batteries are identified, disposal bins will be delivered to site to facilitate the safe transfer of the failed batteries. This ensures that no battery leakage can occur during the transport process and eliminate the potential risk to the environment.

We Can Dispose of Both Intact and Damaged UPS Batteries

During the life of any UPS, it will be necessary to carry out at least one or two battery replacements.

These will usually be identified as part of your ongoing preventative UPS maintenance plans. Routine replacements normally result in batteries that are considered ‘intact’ with little or no defects or visible leakages.

However intact batteries are still considered hazardous goods and therefore require the necessary disposal requirements.

We are a Fully Certified Waste Carrier

As a result of a failure in the battery strings - swelling, cracks or worse case fire damage can occur to individual battery cells. These are considered ‘damaged’ batteries and are subject to stricter disposal requirements due to the risk of battery acid leakage which is both harmful and dangerous to the environment.

As a fully certified waste carrier we can responsibly remove any intact or damaged batteries from your site as part of a replacement or any ad hoc battery issues you may have.

What Happens With Old UPS Batteries

Once removed from site, the batteries are sent to a specialist Waste Transfer Station where they are stripped down into their separate components for recycling.

  • Plastic cases
  • Metal plates
  • Copper / Aluminium terminals
  • Acidic electrolyte

Our UK Environment Agency issued Waste Carriers’ licence authorises us to legitimately remove all batteries from your site for delivery to an accredited waste transfer station.

We can remove, transport, and dispose of your electrical waste in accordance with the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) directive, which sets out the responsibilities of Electrical and Electronic Equipment producers for the collection and recycling of their products at the end of their lifecycle.

Full Audit Trail & Disposal Certificates on Completion

As a certified waste carrier, we will ensure all batteries are disposed of and recycled with a full audit trail and provide the necessary certificates on completion.

Specialist Power Systems can authenticate the disposal and recycling of your old UPS batteries, giving you the peace of mind that all your hazardous waste will be removed and recycled safely and thoroughly following the government guidelines.

What You Need to Know About ISO 14001

Businesses face increasing pressure from customers, regulators, and governments to reduce their environmental impact.

ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an EMS (environmental management system). It helps us improve our environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.

The goal of ISO 14001 is to create an environmental management system capable of identifying and controlling the environmental impact of our activities, products, and services and to continually improve our environmental performance.

More information about the ISO 14000 family can be found here.
